Chapter 9: She has become the main gossip fodder for idle mouths
The next day, Tang Cheng Cheng became the young lord of the Li Family overnight and was now under the control of the demon fox. The first thing she did was to make “her body” her own personal maid and arranged for the rest of the maid to be repositioned elsewhere. She then sent someone to her Tang household to notify them that she had been promoted three ranks higher from the rough maid to the personal maid of the eldest Young master. Thus she would not be able to go back home during this period of time.
The sudden decision made by the heir of the Li Household caused the rumors to spread freely in the air.
The pure hearted Young master who had a clean reputation finally had a girl that caught his eyes!
Yet everyone didn’t understand why the tall immaculate eldest young lord who resembled an angel would fall for that thin dry twig of a charmless girl that had her tanned face burnt by the sun.
Originally there were two personal maids that followed the eldest young master, they were — Li Er and Shun Er and their faces were ten times prettier than her.
Furthermore, if he really wanted to have a girl to warm his bed, was it really necessary for him to send the rest of his maids away?
Why did it feel like they were missing out on something really important?
The servants didn’t dare to ask the eldest young master themselves, and Madam Li had went to see her son’s condition early in the morning. She knew that her son had made an impulsive decision, and was worried that perhaps the drowning incident might have short circuited some parts of his brain and made him behave weirdly.
Under the demon fox’s tutelage, she acted as if she was still very weak and said to Madam Li:
“Ser… Your child’s body is still not well, so I don’t wish to see so many people going in and out in front of me. I just need one pair of hands and feet to help me daily.”
Madam Li’s only son had a weak body since he was young so when she heard him said that he wanted to calmly and peacefully nurse back his health, she can only agree with him reluctantly.
“If this girl doesn’t serve you well then do tell mother immediately. Am I clear?” Madam Li gently instructed.
She was afraid that her darling son will be harmed.
“This child understands. Mother, this child needs to rest now.”
“Then you should rest.”
Madam Li pulled up the warm blanket and patted lovingly on his chest two times. She then turned around to face Fox and said to him harshly:
“Serve young master well, do you understand?”
“…”
Fox had never bowed to anyone throughout his whole life so even though he was now in Tang Cheng Cheng‘s body, he couldn’t lower his dignity.
“Awful girl, how dare you not respond to Madam when she is telling you something?!”
Madam Li’s maid, Qi Er rushed forward and was prepared to slap him but Tang Cheng Cheng was afraid that trouble was about to break out, so she cried out loudly as if she was in pain.
“I have a headache, so I wish to rest now. Please don’t make any noises.”
She pressed her fingers on her temples, and tried to act as naturally as possible.
“Don’t make a noise!” Madam Li said sternly as she worried about her darling son.
Qi Er then suppressed her anger and put her hands down.
It wasn’t easy to get everyone out of the room but the building fell into silence as everyone left. Tang Cheng Cheng immediately rushed down the bed to close the checkered main doors.
Fox sat calmly in front of the red sandalwood round table and slowly ate the clear boiled lamb meat soup that Madam Li had sent to Li Hai Jiao to nourish his body.
“Do you know that what you did today will cut away all the prospects of me being married in the future?”
When Tang Cheng Cheng thought about the rumor that was now floating around without an end, she could not stop the grief that came from within.
When the servants were free, they always like to gossip about the young master.
Even if she never said a word when she was working in the laundry room, she would always hear a bunch of rumors about him. Yet now, she had become the female lead in everyone’s wagging tongue while they shared idle gossips. Sob, sob, sob…
“Tsk.”
Fox clicked his tongue in annoyance.
“You won’t be able to live past next month anyway.”
So why do you need to marry?
“What did you just say?” Tang Cheng Cheng lifted her tear filled eyes.
“What are you crying for? You know how shameful it looks when an adult man cries like this?”
Although Li Hai Jiao had a weak body, but he was tall and lean, so even though he was a bit too thin, his facial feature were handsome and had a charming definition to it. He had an air of elegance that no one could put a finger on. Now she had reduced him to a crying mess and her clumsy actions didn’t suit her outer appearance. So when Fox saw her like this, he felt the rims of his eyes aching because he couldn’t bear to see her soiling his body this way.
“I am not a man anyway!” She shouted angrily at him.
“Now you are in a man’s body, so you should keep your appearance in check!”
At first he had agreed to make a contract with Li Hai Jiao because of his handsome face and elegant aura (which still paled heavily in comparison to his own). The Li family was also very wealthy and had a lot of power so he decided to become him in order to enjoy all the good days in front of him.
Before he could do that, this awful girl came in and ruined all his plans.
“You were the one that killed the eldest Young Master, right? So you were planning to kill me next?” Tang Cheng Cheng asked firmly.
“You heard me loud and clear all along!” She’s still acting in front of him!
“I was supposed to die yesterday night anyway so now I am only a few days late. Before I die, I need to become a ghost that knows what had happened. Only then, can I shut my eyes in peace!”
Fox was surprised when she said those words.
“Are you not afraid of dying?” He couldn’t help but asked curiously.
“What is the use of being afraid? It’s not as if I won’t die at all if I’m afraid.” She replied without holding back.
Now her life is in this demon’s hands. Fear would not be able to reverse the course of events that had happened so far. It was better to be more practical about the situation and see if she can gain any positive outcomes from the palm of his hands, so that her family no longer need to worry about their survival and she could die a more dignified death.
“You are really rational when it comes to this.”
“I have had too many life and death experiences since I was young. My own mother passed away when I was 7 years old. Before that, I still have two younger sisters who had died and I heard that I used to have an older brother but he died when he was 3. My family is poor and a lot of things happened that was out of our control.” She said softly.
Even her own father was involved in an accident that had crushed his thighs. Now she could not even protect her own life. Life is short and never stagnant so she had to be rational about the situation.
“This wealthy family is going through the same thing anyway.”
Every person had to go through at least 6 cycles of reincarnation. It didn’t matter if they were born again as an animal or a human being, in the end this was just a process for them to attain nirvana[1].
“It’s true because when young master went up the mountains, he was then murdered by a demon half way through his journey. His corpse was then being frozen.”
Before anyone dies, it didn’t matter whether they were rich or poor. Everyone ended up with the same conclusion anyway.
“…” Was she now picking on him?
“I didn’t murder Young Master Li.”
Translation corner:
[1] this has roots in Buddhism as well as Taoism that all living beings on earth are just going through a judging process before they are able to go to something like heaven (nirvana). If you do something good in this life, your good karma will bring it to your next life and the other way around is true as well. If you are an evil person, then you will be reborn as an animal in your next life until you do something good enough to be human one day again. There are a lot more info on this but that is the gist of why this was used.
I’m going to call the demon fox — Fox from now on. He doesn’t really have a name at this time anyway except the one he inherited from the Li Hai Jiao.
